What
is The Buteyko Method?
The Buteyko Method system is a drug-free therapy for the management
of asthma. It allows an asthmatic maximum control of their asthma
while using a minimum amount of their prescription medications.
The Buteyko
Method consists of a series of safe and effective breathing exercises,
which alter asthma inducing breathing patterns. Once breathing patterns
are normalized, asthma symptoms dramatically decrease along with
medication intake.
What
Conditions Does The Buteyko Method Treat?
The Buteyko Method is currently used successfully for the treatment
of asthma, emphysema, allergies, hyperventilation, panic attacks,
bronchiectasis, the relief of sinusitis, snoring, sleep apnea, hayfever
and many stress-related breathing disorders.
What
The Buteyko Method isn't
This program is not about throwing away your drugs, nor does it
involve physiotherapy, meditation, religion, rebirthing, hypnotherapy,
vitamins, special diets, the power of positive thinking or equipment.
There is no physical contact with the instructor or anyone else
in the class.

"I
was a skeptic but can honestly say it has virtually made my
life asthma-free. I went to the doctor last October just for
a checkup and thought that I had better get another ventolin
puffer for relief. A year later, I still haven't collected
it from the pharmacy!"

How Effective
Are The Exercises?
In November 1994, medical trials, sponsored by the Australian
Association of Asthma Foundations, were started at the Mater Hospital,
Brisbane Australia. Six weeks into the trial, the group practicing
the Buteyko breathing exercises, had reduced their bronchodilator
(reliever) medication by 90%. Six weeks later they had also reduced
their steroid intake by 49%. The control group practicing physiotherapy
exercises were using the same amount of steroids and 6% less bronchodilator
(reliever) medication after 12 weeks. See

How
Does The Buteyko Method Work?
Asthmatics Overbreathe
Asthmatics overbreathe. That means breathing heavily, rapidly or
through the mouth when there is no need for it. Often hyperventilation
occurs unconsciously, resulting in irritation, inflammation and
constriction of the airways.
Multiple studies
have shown that on average, asthmatics breathe two to three times
more air than people without asthma. Asthmatics tend to breathe
through their mouths instead of their noses, and also at a higher
than normal breathing rate. On average, asthmatics are breathing
12 to 14 liters of air a minute instead of the typical 4 to 6 liters
of air a minute.
Overbreathing
Creates Health Problems
Overbreathing can be compared to overeatingif you eat two
to three times a day more than you need to, you are going to have
health problems. Consider that you can live for a month without
food but only minutes without air. Of the two, breathing is obviously
of greater importance and breathing two to three times in excess
of your body's needs will also create health problems.

Christian Bohr, 1855-1911, discovered in 1904 that the affinity
of hemoglobin for oxygen depends on the pH of the blood. The
response of hemoglobin to changes in pH of the blood is called
the Bohr Effect. Oxygen binds tightly with blood hemoglobin
and hinders oxygen release to the tissues, the brain, heart,
kidneys, and other organs. Brilliance runs in the family-Christian
Bohr was the father of physicist Niels Bohr, who won the 1922
Nobel Prize for physics for his work on the structure of atoms.

Excess Carbon
Dioxide Loss Leads to Mucus, Tightening, Spasms
Unfortunately,
over time this chronic overbreathing, causes an above normal loss
of carbon dioxide (CO2)a gas most of us
believe is a "waste gas", but in reality is a precious gas
which is required for critical regulation of many bodily functions.
One of the most important functions of CO2 is
to regulate the acid/alkaline balance of our blood, because if the
blood becomes too acidic or too alkaline, we will die. When the blood
becomes too acidic due to too much CO2 in the
lungs, (as in the case of holding one's breath for too long), a person
faintsa defense mechanism. When the blood becomes too alkaline
due to too little CO2 in the lungs, (caused
by overbreathing), oxygen forms a tight bond with hemoglobin (the
Bohr Effect *), inhibiting oxygen release to the tissues. In an effort
to prevent further CO2 loss, the lungs secrete
mucus, airways tighten and smooth muscles spasmagain, a defense
mechanism.
To have optimum
oxygenation of our tissues we need 5.5-6.5% of CO2
in our lungs. The standard 0.035% of CO2 in
our atmosphere does not allow for healthy CO2
levels in the body. The body compensates by creating the CO2
necessary for our survival.
However, if we are breathing out CO2 faster
than our bodies can create it, the healthy level of CO2
in our lungs falls and we are unable to utilize our oxygen.
Triggers
Increase Overbreathing
For asthmatics, the CO2 level is always low,
due to chronic overbreathing. When a "trigger" is encountered,
they breathe even more. Their CO2 levels plummet,
the lungs spasm, secrete mucous and constrict airwaysall as
a defense to stop the CO2 loss. When an asthmatic
uses a bronchodilator to override this defense mechanism, the airways
open and s/he experiences relief. Unfortunately though, opening
the airways continues the overbreathing and loss of carbon dioxide.
If the breathing pattern is not reduced by the time the medication
wears off, the person is susceptible to another asthma attack.
Simple Breathing
Exercises Stop Attacks
The good news is that you can learn simple, effective breathing
exercises which are designed to raise your carbon dioxide levels
back to normal and stop attacks. With a raise in CO2,
your breathing will normalize and your symptomsalong with
your need for medicationwill greatly diminish or altogether
disappear. Imagine, your asthmatic symptoms will disappear and you
may, after a short amount of time, no longer need to use your drugsyou'll
be free again!
